Opening access to information could bring significant benefits to citizens services. Focus Washington TechView spoke with the city of San Francisco chief information officer Chris Vein who explains us how his city is developing innovations solutions to achieve open government-related applications, such as crime mapping. As an example, Vein walks us through the concept of how two developer mothers created a listing of services for activities with their children, such as best parks to go with their kids, best schools, best services for their kids, etc. It is a mommy application that shows that the opened information can make real changes in the lives of its citizens. And the city is now working with other cities to further this vision. For more information about the Gov 2.0 Expo, visit http://www.gov2expo.com/gov2expo2010.

Cisco and Environmental Sustainability

On April 14, 2010, in Featured, TechView, by Focus Washington

More than one billion people in 190 countries will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day this year. Along this theme, Bruce Klein, Ciscos SVP for the U.S. Public Sector organization, joins Focus Washington and shares with us Ciscos vision on environmental sustainability and how are government agencies are using technology to become green. For example, U.S. Postal Service is using collaboration technologies to train its employees remotely, and expects to reduce annual travel costs by approx. $10 million. Also, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General was the first department in the state to adopt virtualization technologies, and has reduced energy usage by 40%. Agencies can become green while lowering costs, achieving greater energy efficiency, among other benefits.

On the day of his Capitol Hill testimony, Ross Brickley, president of CCRx of NC, Inc. and former president of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, founder of the Quality Care Coalition for Patients in Pain (QCCPP), explains how and to what extent DEA rules affect patients in nursing facilities, and focuses on long-term care, and those receiving hospice services. He shares with us a haunting study conducted by the QCCPP, that shows nearly two thirds of physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses and other clinicians say that DEA procedures are resulting in delays in getting pain medication to their patients. In Ohio, where DEA has been most active, 86 percent of respondents indicated that treatment has been delayed. For more information about the report Patients in Pain: How U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Rules Harm Patients in Nursing Facilities, visit http://www.qccpp.org/report.

Focus Washington recently sat down with Douglas C. Smith, President and CEO, Ericsson Federal Inc. In our studios, Mr. Smith shared his thoughts on the military’s increasing need for broadband communication solutions on and off the battlefield. As conflicts and emergencies continue to emerge around the globe and here at home, Ericsson Federal Inc. is staying on the forefront of cutting edge communication technology. However, as Mr. Smith points out, there is a major discrepancy between the luxuries used in private industry and what is being deployed on the battlefield.  Congress has been slow to act, and our service men and women are paying the price.

Doug Smith is President and CEO of Ericsson Federal Inc. (EFI). He is driving the adoption of Ericssons solutions into U.S. federal, state and local government agencies that are demanding the same broadband applications and communications capabilities as commercial markets and working with EFI customers to leverage Ericssons worldwide commercial leadership and massive research and development investment to achieve mission success.
